Acne

Acne is a condition that appears as whiteheads, blackheads, inflamed pimples, and cysts on the skin. It typically occurs on the face, but may also appear on the chest, back, neck, and arms. A common misconception is that acne is caused by poor hygiene or by eating certain foods. In fact, acne develops when the pores become plugged by oil. Although it may be more common in adolescence, acne can occur in adults of all ages. If untreated, severe cases of acne may result in permanent scars. We offer many acne treatments, including exfoliating peels, facials, antibiotics, creams, and lotions. Contact The Cosmedic Centre to schedule a dermatology consultation and find out which acne treatments will work best for you.

Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that often begins with intense itching followed by a rash with dry, flaky or scaly skin on top of inflamed skin. In severe cases, symptoms may include blistering, oozing, and bleeding. Eczema is associated with other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever, and is found in people of all ages, including infants. The exact causes of eczema are unknown, but it seems to be triggered by stress, a cold or upper respiratory infection, or by coming in contact with harsh chemicals or rough materials. There is no cure for eczema, but symptoms may be kept under control through the use of moisturizing lotions and creams to keep the skin moist and prevent itching, hydrocortisone creams to prevent inflammation, and antihistamines to reduce severe itching. Antibiotics or antifungal creams may also be prescribed to prevent infection in severe cases, and phototherapy may also be helpful.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an itchy and often painful chronic skin condition characterized by red, inflamed, scaly patches, and silvery flakes of skin called scales. It is often located around the joints, but can it also affect the nails. Psoriasis can also cause a form of arthritis for some people. The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but it may be genetic, and stress, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption may aggravate the condition. There is currently no cure for psoriasis, but there are dermatology treatments available to control its symptoms, including topical products, oral medications, and phototherapy.

Phototherapy for Psoriasis

At The Cosmedic Centre we offer advanced phototherapy for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis that has not responded well to less intensive treatments such as creams and medications. Our phototherapy system combines both Narrowband and UVB light to provide comprehensive light treatment of the psoriasis. Over a series of regularly scheduled treatments (approximately two to five sessions per week depending on the severity), patients usually begin to notice diminished symptoms and visibility of the rash. Phototherapy has proven to be an effective treatment for approximately 85 to 90 percent of psoriasis sufferers, and with continued treatment the results can be maintained long-term.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that produces acne-like symptoms such as redness, bumps or pimples, and small visible blood vessels on the face. It may begin in the center of the face and spread to the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead, and can also affect the eyes, ears, chest, and back in some people. Rosacea seems to run in families and is more common among people who have fair skin or who blush easily. Anything that causes the blood vessels in the face to expand can cause rosacea to flare up, including exercise, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, exposure to sun and wind, and hot weather. There is no cure for rosacea, but symptoms can be controlled when diagnosed and treated early. Treatment may involve the use of antibiotic creams or pills, and medications such as Accutane or MetroGel® topical treatment. If left untreated, rosacea may progress into a condition called rhinophyma, characterized by a red, bulbous nose, puffy cheeks, and bumps, which typically requires laser surgery to treat.

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses (AK) are skin lesions that may eventually develop into skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) if not removed. They develop slowly after extensive exposure to sunlight, and typically have a rough texture and appear red, pink, or light tan. They are common in fair-skinned individuals and on areas of the skin that are most vulnerable to the effects of the sun, including the face, forearms, hands, and scalp. At The Cosmedic Center, we offer several skin cancer treatment options to prevent AKs from developing into skin cancer, including removal through liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery), topical treatments, chemical peels, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and laser surgery. The daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen and minimizing your exposure to the sun may also help reduce existing AKs and prevent new lesions from developing.

Skin Cancer Screening - Mole Checks

Detecting skin cancer as early as possible is crucial to achieving successful treatment. A major focus of his dermatology procedures, patients should visit Dr. Brahmatewari at our Miami Beach skin cancer treatment center on a yearly basis for a visual inspection of their moles to detect any irregularities that could indicate the presence of cancerous cells. During the mole examination, Dr. Brahmatewari will look for the ABCDs of skin cancer: Asymmetry, Border Irregularity, Color and Diameter.

The ABCDs of Skin Cancer

Asymmetry - If there were a line drawn down the center of a healthy mole, each half would be very similar in size and shape. An irregular, asymmetrical shape is indicative of skin cancer.

Border Irregularity - Malignant moles tend to form jagged or undefined borders, whereas the borders of healthy moles are generally smooth and rounded.

Color - A mole that is more than one color at once or changes color over time may be malignant.

Diameter - Any mole over six millimeters in diameter is potentially dangerous.

Contact us today to schedule a skin cancer screening appointment with Dr. Brahmatewari. The yearly mole check is a simple procedure that may save your life.

Mohs Skin Cancer Treatment

Skin cancers range from the least aggressive cancers, called basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas, to the most serious, melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas in addition to melanomas must be removed entirely, including some of the surrounding skin, which may contain additional cancer cells. To effectively eliminate cancer cells from the skin and surrounding tissues, Dr. Brahmatewari performs Mohs surgery at our Miami Beach facility. This type of Mohs skin cancer treatment uses a microscope to precisely identify and remove the entire cancer, leaving as much healthy tissue as possible unharmed. Mohs surgery is the most precise method of skin cancer removal and has a cure rate of up to 99 percent, which is the highest rate of all the treatments for skin cancer. Mohs surgery even maintains its high cure rate when considering cases in which other forms of skin cancer treatment have failed.

Mohs Surgery Benefits

Most other techniques for skin cancer removal may result in noticeable skin disfigurement, but by leaving more tissue intact, Mohs surgery results in the least amount of scarring and skin distortion after the cancer has been removed. Dr. Brahmatewari’s cosmetic surgery training and experience with advanced methods of wound healing also helps minimize any residual scarring. Because we have a full-service surgery center onsite, your Mohs surgery can be conveniently performed right at The Cosmedic Centre.

Please explore the website for The American Society for Mohs Surgery for more information about Mohs surgery and other associated topics.

Contact The Cosmedic Centre today for more information and resources about Mohs surgery. Our surgeon in Miami Beach can provide Mohs skin cancer treatment for the successful removal of melanoma with the least amount of skin damage.
