Melasma

Melasma (chloasma) is a common condition that is characterized by brown or brown-gray patches on the skin. It typically appears on the face, but may also appear on the neck and forearms. The condition is more common among women, especially during pregnancy, and among people who have darker skin tones. The cause is unknown, but those with a family history of melasma may be more likely to develop the condition. In addition to pregnancy, common triggers of melasma may include sun exposure, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, cosmetics, and certain medications. Melasma may disappear on its own, but it may also be treated with skin-lightening creams, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatment. Daily use of a sunscreen is also recommended.
